TEN VALUES THAT BUILD STRONG FAMILIES

TEN VALUES THAT BUILD STRONG FAMILIES

TAKING GOD SERIOUSLY

“You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God.     Exodus 20:7

What’s in a name?  Your reputation, character, and authority.

God is telling us that His name is important

and when we misuse it, it’s a big deal.

The word profane comes from two Latin words:

pro = before and fanum= Temple.

To profane means to drag out holy things from the Temple, to degrade them.

WAYS PEOPLE MISUSE GOD’S NAME

1. TO I__________

America has become one of the most foul-mouthed nations in the world.

Why do people swear?

It takes maturity and self-control to discipline your speech.

2. TO I_____________

“I’ve prayed about it” can be used as a cover

 for our own misplaced priorities.

He was saying to them, “You nicely set aside the commandment of God in order to keep your tradition. For Moses said ‘Honor your Father and Mother’; and, ‘He who speaks evil of Father of Mother, let him be put to death’; but you say, ‘If a man says to his father or his mother, anything of mine you might have been helped by is Corban (that is to say, given to God), you no longer permit him to do anything for his father or his mother; thus invalidating the word of God by your tradition which you have handed down.”                                                                                     Mark 7:9-13

3. TO I___________________

“God told me what you should do!”

In the world they call that forgery.

Forgery = when you use someone else’s name to get what you want.

4. USE GOD’S NAME I_____________________

This is reducing God to an exclamation point!

Don’t use God’s name flippantly.

“The law of Moses says, ‘You shall not break your vows to God, but must fulfill them all.’ But I say: Don’t make any vows! Even to say, ‘By heavens!’ is a sacred vow to God, for the heavens are God’s throne. And if you say, ‘By the earth!’ it is a sacred vow, for the earth is His footstool. And don’t swear ‘By Jerusalem!’ for Jerusalem is the capital of the great King. Don’t even swear ‘By my head!’ for you can’t turn one hair white or black. Say just a simple ‘Yes I will’ or ‘No I won’t.’ Your word is enough. To strengthen your promise with a vow shows that something is wrong.”

                                                                                                Matthew 5:33-37

People say, “I didn’t mean anything by it.”

HOW TO USE GOD’S NAME CORRECTLY

1. R_____________ GOD’S NAME CONTINUALLY

“Give to the Lord the glory due His name.”                  Psalm 29:2

“You have given me the blessings You reserve for those who reverence Your name.”                                                                                          Psalm  61:5

·         Avoid entertainment that dishonors God.

·         Tactfully correct those who misuse God’s name

·         Begin at home

2. R______________ GOD’S NAME CLEARLY

“A person who calls himself a Christian should not be doing things that are wrong.”                                                                                       2 Timothy 2:19

“What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace might increase? May it never be! How shall we who died to sin still live in it?

                                                                                                Romans 6:1-2

3. R_______ ON GOD’S NAME COMPLETELY

“Now God has showed us a different way to heaven - not by ‘being good enough’ and trying to keep His laws, but by a new way (though not new, really, for the Scriptures told about it long ago). Now God says He will accept us and acquit us - declare us ‘not guilty’ - if we trust Jesus Christ to take away our sins. And we can all be saved in this same way, by coming to Christ, no matter who we are or what we have been like.   Romans 3:21-22

“Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved.”                           Acts 4:12

“Let me ask you this one question: Did you receive the Holy Spirit by trying to keep the Jewish laws? Of course not, for the Holy Spirit came upon you only after you heard about Christ and trusted Him to save you. Then have you gone completely crazy? For if trying to obey the Jewish laws never gave you spiritual life in the first place, why do you think that trying to obey them now will make you stronger Christians?                           Galatians 3:2-3

“The mouth speaks what the heart is full of.”               Luke 6:45
